We are facing an increasing pace of change in technology, but we, as a people, are not adapting or responding at a similar rate. We need to change this, and consider where we want to go.

Alvin Toffler wrote:
“ To survive, to avert what we have termed future shock, the individual must become infinitely more adaptable and capable than ever before. We must search out totally new ways to anchor ourselves, for all the old roots - religion, nation, community, family, or profession - are now shaking under the hurricane impact of the accelerative thrust. It is no longer resources that limit decisions, it is the decision that makes the resources.”
This was written in the 1970's, as a part of his best selling book, Future Shock. At no time since then has the concept of future shock, or the pace of change had a bigger impact than today.
Cyber-Psychology and the Cyber-Physical world
As we steamroll towards the end of another decade, we are facing fundamental shifts in how we work with and interact with technology. With the advent of Industry 4.0, the explosion of Internet of Things devices, and the increasing "measurement" of human aspects, we are rapidly moving to the position where the human - technology interface is becoming blurred. More so however, we are not yet asking the right questions, or prompting the right political discourse around how to use technology in the future.
Social Media symptoms
“Facebook is not your friend. It is a surveillance engine.” Richard Stallman, programmer, activist, Founder, GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation
I've been working in "Cyber" for the last 25 years, and think we need to be having a lot better conversations; we are way behind the ball when it comes to developing social and human sciences around technology. In fact, with the pace of change of technology, we no longer have the history, values, morals, or ethical frameworks within which to apply to some of the new technologies, and their impacts on society. We need to change this!
